Chapter Seven

Andar could tell Leah was excited as he escorted her to the med-bay the next morning. She was bouncing on her heels with every step and he knew she’d take to the air with happiness if she had wings. One of Leah’s people from the downed slave ship had been found, and Leah was anxious to see her. The huge smile on her face made her shine like a third sun and Andar couldn’t keep his eyes off her. It didn’t help that she was dressed in clothing similar to what Kriathian women wore: a light brown wrap around her breasts, exposing her shoulders, upper back, and stomach, a leather kilt similar to the one he wore, and leather sandals. In his opinion, she was born to be a Kriathian.

The med-bay’s doors slid open and Leah’s eyes widened. She rushed inside. “Chloe!”

A girl with fiery red hair grinned, hugging Leah tightly. “Hey, girl. Love the new look you’re rockin’. Glad to see you’re still alive. I lost track of you in the trees.”

Leah winced. “I didn’t actually make it to the trees. I went back into the ship to look for a way to contact Earth and . . . things didn’t go well.” She glanced back at Andar and smiled. “At least not at first.”

Chloe’s eyes flicked over to Andar and her lips curved up in a small smirk. “I know the feeling.” Her gaze slid over to the far corner of the room and Andar realized Corsar was standing there, as if keeping watch over the tiny human.

“She’s compulsive and prone to taking action with little thought of the consequences,” Corsar said, frowning at her. “Rather than allow herself to be imprisoned by the Struun again, the headstrong woman actually threw herself off a cliff to avoid capture. She’s lucky I was able to reach her in time.”

“Very lucky,” the redhead murmured softly.

To Andar’s surprise, Corsar flashed a small smile at her. He grinned. Apparently he wasn’t the only one susceptible to the charms of these Earth women.

Leah gestured at Chloe’s forehead. “What’s with the new scar?”

Chloe’s cheeks flushed red as she reached up and ran a finger along the injury. “Not my proudest moment. Those Struun guys were shooting at me and I was running blind through the trees. Ran into a low branch and almost knocked myself out.”

Leah laughed, covering her mouth as she did so. “I’m sorry, but I wasn’t expecting that from the badass warzone reporter.”

Chloe chuckled. “Neither was I, although it looked a lot worse earlier. These guys have a wicked spray that heals almost anything. From what they’ve said even the scar should be gone soon.”

Leah winced for a moment, her shoulders tightening. “Yeah. I’m familiar with their medical technology.”

She looked over and saw one of the lizard people in a nearby bed. “Hi,” she said, nodding. “I’m glad to see you’re okay.” She glanced around, as if looking for someone. “Where’s your friend?”

“My ssssissster and I were sssseparated,” the lizard woman said.
